If magnification is needed, several optic manufacturers offer quality 3-power magnifiers that will greatly extend your AR pistols usability at distance. In the proper mount, these magnifiers can be flipped to the side or removed when not needed.
Low power variable optics in the x range with good eye relief, true one power and illuminated reticles are also excellent choices. They can add some ounces to the platform, especially when accounting for the weight of the mount, but a brace certainly helps with that. Depending on your expected usage, you may be tempted to mount a 2.
If you choose to go that route, be sure you can explain how you plan on effectively aiming, supporting and shooting it with a single hand, if questioned. Just food for thought.
The last component to consider is the pistol grip. Once you shorten a platform, a more vertical pistol grip will be much more ergonomic. The AR pistol is a platform of many uses. Sure, they are a ton of fun at the range, teaching children how to shoot, and for use in defending the homestead, but consider them for hunting applications as well. A light, compact AR pistol in the right caliber is easy to carry for long distances and over challenging terrain. As the AR pistol continues to evolve, expect to find more of them chambered in.
Next time you head off into the backcountry, consider bringing one along. White lights, slings, aftermarket triggers and ambidextrous controls are all upgrades worth considering. Most importantly, get out there, have some fun and share the experience with someone new to shooting. The weight and balance of an AR pistol make one-handed shooting almost impossible for most shooters. On the other hand, a proper handgun shooter will almost always employ a two-handed grip when shooting.
Offhand pistol shooting is a skill most casual shooters never develop. An AR pistol fit for home defense can cost more than twice the price of the handgun. Home defense shotguns can be purchased new for even cheaper than a reasonably priced handgun. All guns are noisy. Overall, any gun discharged in an enclosed space can damage your hearing. Overall, AR pistols tend to be noisier than many other guns generating decibel levels that can affect your hearing after only one shot.
None of us would think about going to the range to practice without hearing protection. However, in the stress of a home invasion scenario, there may not be time for this. You must be aware of the dangers in your choice of firearms for home defense. On the other hand, one loud and scary shot from an AR pistol may be all that is necessary to cause an invading bad guy to turn and run. Anytime you discharge a firearm in a home or apartment, there is a worry about the bullet penetrating walls.
Many handgun calibers use big, heavy bullets with much greater penetration power than the 5. It is the ballistic characteristics of the. Handgun calibers typically leave the muzzle at relatively slow speeds and use bullets with considerable mass. This slow speed and large mass make handgun bullets more apt to penetrate walls and furniture. More penetration with less damage to the bullet makes these calibers a larger danger downrange.
The 5. Also, this lightweight bullet leaves the muzzle at extremely high speeds. The bullet may fragment or begin to tumble, making it much less of danger to anyone downrange. Below is an interesting video of a second amendment advocate doing a second amendment audit in Edmond OK with an AR Pistol. Production of AR-style guns has soared since the federal ban expired. In , , were made.
In , the number was 1. The organization does not provide sales data, nor does it have production estimates, but says that year's activity likely broke all records. Today, one of out of every five firearms purchased in this country is an AR-style rifle , according to a NSSF estimate. Americans now own an estimated 15 million ARs , gun groups say. Chandler is an unlikely AR enthusiast. He grew up outside Baltimore, a city plagued by gun violence, raised by parents opposed to firearms and was friends with kids whose lives had been torn apart by them.
For much of his youth he considered himself anti-gun. Then a well-to-do neighbor was shot in a home invasion. Chandler realized that his family had no weapon to defend itself, and decided to buy a gun when he got old enough. When he turned 21 and began shopping, Maryland tightened laws in response to the December mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut.
That measure banned many types of semiautomatic rifles, so when Chandler eventually decided that he wanted an AR, he built one from scratch, adhering to the new restrictions.
On one of his recent visits to a gun range, Chandler showed what made the AR a cutting-edge gun when it was created, and one reason why it became so widespread. Pushing the gun's "takedown pins" with his fingers, he broke his gun down into its basic components, and within several seconds snapped it back together.
This is why some people compare the AR to a car chassis, others to Legos or Mr. Potato Head. Those who build ARs from scratch link themselves to a centuries-old American gunsmithing tradition. Building an AR at home often begins with buying a "lower receiver," the only part with a serial number and that requires a federal background check.
The rest of the core parts are available online. Then there is a seemingly endless array of accessories: barrels, grips, stocks, rails, magazines and scopes. Chandler loves the AR he built. I have a couple 7. My recommendation, if you choose a 5. Do your research and select a load which still provides reliable expansion and adequate penetration for the low impact velocities you can expect.
Remember, its impact velocity not muzzle velocity which is important. Another thing to consider is what type of brace to use. While SB Tactical led the way, there are a number of alternatives on the market. I have a somewhat unique view of stabilizing braces compared to most of my colleagues in the firearms media. I was crippled in both my shoulders back in , underwent surgery on each and then some 18 months of physical therapy.
Two decades latter I have limited range of motion, live with constant pain and am limited on what I can do. So, I approach the use and value of a stabilizing brace with a bit of a different perspective than most.
