Active learning is a form of learning in which teaching strives to involve students in the learning process more directly than in other methods. They cite literature that indicates that to learn, students must do more than just listen: They must read, write, discuss, or be engaged in solving problems. How do I learn to remember rote? Emphasize context and purpose. Ask yourself why students are being asked to memorize these facts in the first place.
Break down new vocabulary words, especially those that are more than two syllables long. Allow time to rehearse and remember the first couple of syllables before tacking on later ones. How do you read and remember notes? Below are nine of the most practical techniques — bonus points if you can remember all nine tomorrow.
Skim the text first. Take notes on the page. Ask yourself questions about the material. Impress, associate, repeat. Introduce the information to others.
Read out loud. Read on paper. Learn unevenly. What does passive learning mean? Remember Schoolhouse Rock? Working with information over and over until it is remembered isn't a whole lot of fun, but teachers know how to make it fun!
I'm a big believer in playing games! Did you realize there are basic addition and subtraction facts to be learned? You can't just give all to the kiddos at once! Give a few at a time, then when those are learned, add a few more. We want them to have success, not be overwhelmed! Rote learning, or memorization, is an important part of learning, but please remember it is only the beginning. These are the building blocks.
Once the basic information is learned, children need to grow from that knowledge and develop a deeper understanding with motivation to learn more and process that information. Rote learning only covers the bottom step of Bloom's Taxonomy. It is our job to bring the children much further! In over two decades, I have never witnessed an elementary teacher or a school principal allowing this pedagogical situation to occur. In fact, I have actually observed the opposite more often — when a teacher does not provide a sufficient amount of practice on a particular skill to instill student mastery.
First and foremost, repetitive practice is always required to threshold levels for any human endeavor to master a skill regardless of the exercise, activity or task.
For example, in elementary arithmetic skill practice, a viable and general rule to achieve a level of skill proficiency is the following threshold of discrete exposure ranges:. For students receiving special education services, the threshold number of repetitions will vary.
Of course, the next step in the instructional process is to transfer the discrete skill into an appropriate situation or application. Simple enough! The only remaining question is the manner in which students are provided the threshold repetitions. It is a dynamic process and the teacher can control the number of repetitions for each student that is academically struggling, so all children in the classroom are provided equity in the learning process.
