How long dbs check

The DBS certificate does not say whether or not a person should be employed or allowed to volunteer; this decision is always left up to the employer. They will make their decision based on the type of offences or cautions which are listed on the certificate and the type of role which is being applied for. There is no simple answer as to how long it takes for a check to come through.

The average time is 8 weeks, but for people with many previous addresses or changes of names, this could take longer. If this happens, not only can your check be delayed, it can be withdrawn by the DBS. This means you would need to start the process from the beginning.

This combined with staffing issues caused by the coronavirus pandemic means that the average processing times for DBS Checks will be slightly increased for the next few months. They estimate that DBS Checks will take an additional 5 days to process.

If your DBS Check is stuck at stage 4 for more than 60 days, an escalation can be raised. You would need to contact the DBS on to request this. Once an escalation is raised, the DBS will start an investigation with the police to establish why there is a delay.

If any queries are raised, they will need to be dealt with before the check can continue. If a query finds incorrect information has been submitted, the application will be withdrawn. The 60 days or more wait time still applies. Once received, the application will go through the following stages: Stage 1: The application form is received and validated by the DBS. Stage 2: The application is sent to the Police National Computer PNC which consists of several databases which gives access to information of national and local significance from law enforcement agencies from across the UK.

Stage 3: If applying for an Enhanced DBS Check, when required, the applicant will be checked for their eligibility to work with vulnerable groups in regulated activity. Examples of roles where this would be applicable include: care assistants, nurses and teachers to name a few. Exact timescales cannot be given due to every application being dissimilar. Stage 5: The certificate is in the final stage of printing and will be routinely distributed to applicants the following day.

It is important to note that a certificate can take up to 14 days to reach an applicant address. Most Common Reasons For a DBS to be Delayed As mentioned above, the level of check being applied for will affect the amount of time taken for clearance due to the depth of criminal record history and check points required.

ID Verification : Previous Names and Addresses Ensuring you have all of the required forms of ID before starting your application is essential, as applying for these at the time of application can result in weeks of delays. When an applicant has moved around multiple Police force areas in the UK in the last 5 years, the application will need to be passed to each of them. Where the police need to re-validate the identity of the applicant in order to say for sure that the information they have belongs to an applicant or not, the Police force in question could request a fingerprint check, or request copies of the applicant's main ID documents, which can cause a delay in the process.

There can be many reasons that can cause a DBS check to take longer, and here are some of the most common reasons for delays:.

It's always important for both the applicant and employer to carefully check all the details submitted on the form. If any errors are discovered by the Umbrella Body, then the form will have to be amended, eating up more time. However, if there are any errors that only the applicant would be able to spot and they don't , then the application may be rejected by the DBS, meaning the whole process must start again.

This most commonly occurs when the applicant has lived at numerous addresses across England and Wales, as each Police Force local to each address must do a check. As soon as the Police Force receives the check application, there is no guarantee how quickly they will complete the check.

These turnarounds can be dependent on various factors, such as how many requests the particular Police Force has. If you would like to see a summary of the average turnarounds from the Police Force, you can do here. As both an employer and individual, getting your DBS check returned quickly is very important, and below are some ways you can help ensure this happens!

When you do an DBS application online, it can be filled out and sent off in just a few clicks - much better than sending it in the post. On top of this, any mistakes can be easily pointed out and changed, without all the scribbling out.

As an officially registered Umbrella Body, we are also connected directly to the UK Government Gateway, meaning we are literally only a click away from sending it off to them when you send it to us! Many DBS Umbrella Bodies can take up to 5 days until they process and send off the DBS application - some will even charge a premium for prioritising the check!

At Aaron's Department, we guarantee to submit every application we receive before 4pm the same day, because we know how import receiving the results quickly is. Of course, this is assuming that there are no errors that we need to get in contact with you about!

Whilst our system does have an in-built error checker, and our team will double-check, there are only some errors the applicant or employer can identify, such as the work being undertaken and previous address history.

This is because once the application has been processed and sent off to the DBS, it is out of their hands. Now the check return-time is totally dependent on how busy the DBS is, the accuracy of the information, and other previously mentioned factors.

For example, we have designed our application system with the user in mind, meaning there is automatic error checking, easy to understand instructions, and on top of this, as mentioned, we ensure every DBS application we receive is sent off the same day, when received by 4pm.
