Why is darnay sentenced to death

Manette in prison. He has chosen to live in England because he despises the apathetic and often cruel acts of aristocrats such as his uncle, Marquis Evremonde. Darnay resolves to meet his death bravely.

Like Madame Defarge , Miss Pross has no real sense of her own self-worth. She lives entirely for Lucie. What does Carton recall as he walks at night? Carton recalls a bible verse read at his father's funeral.

Why does Carton go to the wine-shop? They should know there is someone in Paris that resembles Charles Darnay. This coincidence enables Carton to stand in for Darnay, who has been sentenced to die on the guillotine. Madame Defarge's death by a bullet from her own gun—she dies in a scuffle with Miss Pross—symbolizes Dickens's belief that the sort of vengeful attitude embodied by Madame Defarge ultimately proves a self-damning one.

She is bent on seeking revenge for her family by killing all members of the Evremonde family. Madame Defarge also plays a victim in this story, having lost her entire family to two men.

Darnay and Lucie are married and depart for their honeymoon. Almost immediately, a change comes over Manette; he now looks scared and lost.

Later that day, Miss Pross and Mr. Lorry discover Manette at his shoemaker's bench, lapsed into an incoherent state. When Lucie Manette becomes an orphan after her father is mysteriously imprisoned in the Bastille and her mother dies, Lorry brings her back to England to be raised there.

On the surface Carton appears to make the sacrifice simply out of love for Lucie and her child. However, by considering the theme of resurrection that Dickens has woven through the story, we realize that Carton is also giving his life to save his soul.

His remembrance of the "I am the resurrection and the life"passage two nights earlier indicates that he expects to find eternal life through his death.

Additionally, by saving Darnay, he resurrects his best qualities in two ways. He has resurrected them in himself by planning and managing the crisis when the others could do nothing to help, and, by giving new life to Darnay, he has resurrected his own discarded potential through the man who embodies the realization of that potential.
